Carrier Review

Aflac Life Insurance Review: The Final Expense Policy Most Seniors Don't Know About

Aflac is best known for supplemental insurance, but they also offer a competitive simplified-issue final expense whole life policy with no medical exam. Rates are comparable to Mutual of Omaha and Transamerica for most age brackets. Aflac is a strong option for seniors who want an established carrier with an AM Best A+ rating (source: Asurgo carrier analysis, June 2026).

Disclosure: Asurgo is an independent life insurance brokerage licensed in all 50 states. We sell Aflac final expense policies and are compensated via commission when a policy is issued. This review reflects our firsthand experience placing Aflac coverage for our clients.

Beyond the Duck

Aflac Sells Life Insurance? Yes, and It's Worth a Look

Most people associate Aflac with the duck and supplemental insurance products like accident, cancer, and hospital indemnity coverage. What many seniors do not know is that Aflac also offers a simplified-issue final expense whole life policy that competes directly with dedicated final expense carriers. We sell Aflac final expense through our brokerage and find it to be a genuinely competitive option for the right client.

Aflac's final expense product works the same way as policies from Mutual of Omaha or Transamerica: you answer health questions over the phone (no medical exam), receive a same-day decision, and lock in a monthly premium that never increases. The key difference is that Aflac brings an AM Best A+ (Superior) rating to the table, which is the highest tier in the AM Best rating scale and stronger than most final expense carriers.

Strengths

What Aflac Does Well

AM Best A+ (Superior) Rating

Aflac holds an AM Best rating of A+ (Superior), the second-highest possible rating. Only A++ (Superior) is higher. Among the carriers Asurgo represents for final expense, Aflac has one of the strongest financial strength ratings. For seniors who want the reassurance of an exceptionally well-capitalized carrier behind their policy, this is a meaningful differentiator.

Competitive Rates at Younger Ages

At ages 50 to 60, Aflac's Preferred tier rates are within $1 to $3 of Mutual of Omaha, the cheapest carrier on our panel. A 55-year-old female non-smoker pays $29 with Aflac versus $28 with MoO. That $1 per month difference is negligible, and Aflac's higher AM Best rating may tip the scale for some applicants.

Brand Recognition and Trust

Aflac is one of the most recognized insurance brands in the United States. Many seniors already have an Aflac supplemental policy or know the company from decades of advertising. Buying final expense coverage from a brand you already trust can simplify the decision. The final expense policy is a separate product and does not require an existing Aflac supplemental policy.

Three Underwriting Tiers

Aflac offers three underwriting tiers: Preferred (day-one full coverage), Standard (day-one coverage at higher rates), and Modified (graded benefit for higher-risk applicants). This means applicants who do not qualify for the lowest Preferred rates may still receive day-one coverage through the Standard tier before being placed in the graded Modified tier.

Pros & Cons

Where Aflac Falls Short

Pros

  • AM Best A+ (Superior) rating
  • Rates within $1 to $3 of MoO at ages 50 to 60
  • Widely recognized and trusted brand
  • No medical exam required
  • Three underwriting tiers for precise placement
  • Day-one full coverage on Preferred and Standard tiers
  • Level premiums locked for life
  • Issue ages starting at 45

Cons

  • More expensive than MoO at ages 70+ ($18 gap at age 80)
  • Maximum issue age of 80 (MoO and Transamerica go to 85)
  • Modified tier capped at age 75
  • Less specialized in final expense than MoO or Transamerica
  • No guaranteed-issue product (SI only)
  • Lower brand recognition for life insurance specifically

Aflac's cons are mostly about positioning rather than product quality. The final expense product itself is solid. The issue is that at older ages and for applicants with complex health profiles, carriers that specialize in final expense (MoO, Transamerica) tend to offer more competitive pricing and broader underwriting.

Head-to-Head

Aflac vs. Mutual of Omaha vs. Transamerica

The table below compares Aflac against the two most popular simplified-issue carriers on Asurgo's panel. All rates are for female non-tobacco applicants at $10,000 of coverage on each carrier's primary Level tier.

Age MoO Living Promise Aflac FE Transamerica Express Select
50$24/mo$27/mo$33/mo
55$28/mo$29/mo$37/mo
60$33/mo$35/mo$41/mo

Where Aflac Fits in the Lineup

Mutual of Omaha is the cheapest at every age. Transamerica is the most expensive but has the most lenient underwriting. Aflac sits squarely in the middle on price, closer to MoO at younger ages and closer to Transamerica at older ages.

  • Ages 50 to 60: Aflac is only $1 to $3 more than MoO. At these ages, the price difference is minimal and Aflac's stronger AM Best rating (A+ vs. A+) makes it a near-equivalent choice.
  • Ages 65 to 70: The gap widens slightly. Aflac costs $3 more than MoO at 65 and $3 more at 70. Still competitive, but MoO starts to pull ahead.
  • Ages 75 to 80: Aflac is $10 to $18 more than MoO. At these ages, MoO is the clear winner on price. However, Aflac is still $4 to $18 cheaper than Transamerica.

In practice, our agents quote all three carriers on every call. If you qualify for MoO at their lowest tier, we typically place you there. But if MoO's underwriting is a close call and Aflac approves you cleanly, Aflac is a strong backup with minimal price difference at most ages.

Underwriting

Aflac's Three Underwriting Tiers

When you apply for Aflac final expense, your health answers determine which tier you are placed in. Each tier has different pricing and coverage terms.

Preferred Tier (Level Benefit)

The best rates and full day-one coverage. This is the tier shown in the rate tables above. If you are in generally good health and can answer the simplified health questions favorably, this is where you will land. The full death benefit is payable from the first day your policy is in force.

Standard Tier (Level Benefit)

Higher rates than Preferred but still full day-one coverage. Applicants with moderate health conditions that do not qualify for Preferred may be placed here. For example, a 65-year-old female pays $57 on the Standard tier versus $44 on the Preferred tier for the same $10,000 of coverage.

Modified Tier (Graded Benefit)

The highest rates with a graded death benefit during the first two years. Available only to ages 45 to 75. If you pass away from non-accidental causes in the first two years, your beneficiary receives a return of premiums paid plus interest. After two years, the full death benefit applies. This tier is for applicants whose health conditions are too serious for Preferred or Standard but who can still answer the health questions.

If you cannot answer the health questions at all, Aflac is not the right carrier. In that case, a guaranteed-issue product from AIG or Gerber Life would be the next step.

Product Clarity

Aflac Supplemental vs. Aflac Life Insurance

If you searched for "aflac life insurance" or "aflac final expense," you may be wondering how Aflac's life insurance products differ from the supplemental products the company is famous for. Here is the distinction.

Aflac Supplemental Insurance (Accident, Cancer, Hospital)

These products pay cash benefits while you are alive to help cover out-of-pocket medical costs. If you are hospitalized, diagnosed with cancer, or injured in an accident, Aflac pays you a fixed dollar amount. The benefit goes to you, not to a beneficiary. These are the products most people associate with Aflac.

Aflac Final Expense Whole Life

This is a permanent life insurance policy that pays a death benefit to your beneficiary after you pass away. It is designed to cover funeral costs, burial expenses, outstanding debts, or any other purpose your family chooses. The coverage lasts your entire life as long as premiums are paid. This is the product reviewed on this page.

The two product lines are completely separate. You do not need Aflac supplemental insurance to buy Aflac final expense, and vice versa. However, seniors who already carry Aflac supplemental products sometimes prefer to consolidate their coverage under one familiar brand.

Best Fit

Who Should Consider Aflac

Aflac final expense is a strong choice in the following situations:

  • Seniors ages 45 to 65 who want a financially strong carrier. At these ages, Aflac's rates are within a few dollars of MoO, and Aflac's AM Best A+ (Superior) rating is the highest of any final expense carrier on our panel.
  • Existing Aflac policyholders. If you already carry Aflac supplemental insurance and trust the brand, adding final expense coverage through the same company simplifies your insurance portfolio.
  • Applicants who value brand recognition. Aflac is one of the most recognized insurance brands in the country. Some seniors feel more comfortable buying from a name they know. That comfort has value.
  • Borderline MoO applicants. If MoO's underwriting is a question mark for your health profile, Aflac is a natural next option. Similar price, strong financial backing, and slightly different underwriting questions may produce a better outcome.

Not Ideal For

Who Should Look Elsewhere

Aflac is not the best fit in these situations:

  • Seniors over 80. Aflac's maximum issue age is 80. If you are 81 or older, Mutual of Omaha (to 85), Transamerica (to 85), and Aetna/Accendo (to 89) accept older applicants.
  • Seniors who need the absolute lowest price. Mutual of Omaha is cheaper than Aflac at every age. If price is your primary decision factor and you qualify for MoO, choose MoO.
  • Applicants who cannot answer health questions. Aflac is a simplified-issue carrier only. If your health prevents you from answering the underwriting questions, you need a guaranteed-issue product from AIG, Gerber Life, or Colonial Penn.
  • Applicants with complex paired health conditions. Transamerica has the most lenient underwriting on our panel for combinations like insulin-dependent diabetes with COPD, or heart disease with stents. If your health profile is complex, Transamerica may produce a better outcome.
